Project Overview

The Stephen C. O'Connell Center, also known as the O'Dome, is a 10,133-seat multi-purpose arena located on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida. The facility, which gets its name from the university’s sixth president, Stephen C. O’Connell, has been home to many concerts and sporting events since its opening in 1980. However, in 2016 the facility began its $64.5 million renovation.

The reconstruction/renovation project included major updates to the design and layout. The entire interior area of the arena, excluding foundation work, was demolished and rebuilt with the addition of a large hanging scoreboard and luxury suites, locker rooms and meeting rooms were upgraded, swimming and gymnastics areas were revamped, and a "grand entrance" was built, among many other improvements.

Acousti Engineering Company of Florida was responsible for the installation of flooring projects throughout the facility – these areas utilized carpeting, rubber flooring, vinyl flooring, mosaic and porcelain tiling.

Many things made this project a success; one of them being that in the last five months of the project, Acousti reached out to our neighboring branches to assist the general contractor with additional manpower needed in order to meet project completion dates. During this time, Acousti professionals were working 7-day weeks and 12-13 hour days. The added manpower and extended hours allowed the University of Florida to have its first home game on time and without delays – which made all of the work well worth it in the end.

This project had many unique features and challenges, but in the end the communication between the general contractor and all of the different trades, including Acousti made this project run smoothly and come out on time.  Acousti Engineering Company of Florida is proud of the dedication of our workers and all members of the project team for sticking it out through long days and the results of the finished O'Connell Center are truly a sight to see.
